To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
Whereas Hamilton's air quality has been significantly impacted by industrial pollution, including emissions of known carcinogens including benzo(a)pyrene and benzene;
Hamilton's air quality has been linked to a higher burden of respiratory diseases and cancers, particularly in Hamilton's lower city; Local industry has long been exempted from provincial pollution standards and allowed higher emissions;
In order to protect good jobs, reduce environmental impacts of industrial pollution, and promote the health of Hamiltonians, we must support local industry in transitioning to lower-emissions production processes, including green steel production;
We ask the Legislative Assembly of Ontario to:
• Enforce provincial laws to protect air quality in Hamilton and limit pollution.
• Ensure provincial subsidy projects aimed at lowering industrial emissions are attached to fixed timelines with public transparency.
