To the Legislative Assembly of Ontario:
Whereas
- The Government of Ontario is responsible for making sure the Canada Health Act is followed in our province;
- Ontario has shifted some surgeries, including cataract surgery, to private, for‑profit clinics;
- Despite being promised they wouldn't pay for healthcare with their credit card, Ontarians have been charged thousands for cataract surgery due to upselling and other practices aimed at generating profits;
- Media is reporting that patients are paying annual rates for primary care access at private clinics while 1.4 million Ontarians lack a family doctor;
- The Canada Health Act clearly bans extra‑billing and user fees, and requires that medically necessary care be provided based on need, not income;
- The Ministry of Health has directed $155 million of public taxpayer dollars to private clinics to deliver orthopedic surgeries, endoscopies, and CT/MRI instead of directing those funds to publicly-delivered service options;
Therefore, we, the undersigned residents of Canada, call on the Government of Ontario to adhere to the requirements of the Canada Health Act and and recommit to publicly funded, publicly delivered healthcare.
