Implement a Province-Wide Heat Strategy for Schools
As the climate crisis intensifies, our students and educators are paying the price.
We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Ontario to immediately implement a comprehensive heat strategy for all public schools across the province. During the final weeks of this school year, classrooms across Hamilton and many other communities faced sweltering indoor temperatures above 30°C. Students are struggling to concentrate, educators are fighting fatigue, and the risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke are dangerously high.
This is not a one-time event. It’s our new normal and our children deserve better.
We echo and strongly support the joint call made by concerned citizens and MPP Chandra Pasma to the Minister of Education for urgent, province-wide action. The Government of Ontario must prioritize the health, safety, and learning environment of our school communities by adopting the following measures:
A Comprehensive Heat Strategy Including:
- A maximum indoor temperature standard for classrooms and school facilities
- Retrofitting existing schools with air conditioners or heat pumps
- Building upgrades: insulation, energy-efficient windows, cool roofs, and exterior blinds
- Passive cooling solutions like shade structures and misting stations
- Outdoor adaptations such as planting shade trees and installing permeable surfaces
Extreme heat in classrooms is an issue of educational equity, health justice, and climate resilience. Ontario cannot afford to wait.
We urge the Ministry of Education and Premier of Ontario to act swiftly and decisively. Our kids’ health, safety, and learning are on the line, and we must protect them.
Add your name to this petition and let the government know: Every student deserves a safe, cool place to learn.
